Fire Safety: Prevention
What would you do if your house should start on fire? If there was a fire at your place of work? Usually the only time we think about these things is when we hear about a fire in the news, or someone we know experiences one. As fire safety is so important, we all need to think about it more seriously and more regularly.
Fire safety is all about prevention. Whether it's how to prevent a fire from starting in the first place, how to prevent it from spreading, how to prevent yourself and others from getting hurt in case of a fire or to prevent property from being damaged, it really is all about prevention.
Fire Prevention:
Such simple rules as not leaving candles unattended, regularly checking electrical appliances and not overloading the electrical system and keeping highly flammable materials in a safe place are easy to do and are the first steps that can be taken toward prevention of fire.
Preventing a Fire from Spreading
Having working fire detectors, making sure fire extinguishers are easily accessible (and you know where they are and how to use them) and built in sprinkler systems or fire hoses will all make it easier to stop a fire in its early stages, before too much damage or injury can be done.
Preventing Injury or Death
Once a fire has already been started, steps must be taken to put the fire out, but for most people, the most important thing in an already blazing fire is to ensure their own safety. This is really the most important aspect of fire safety: saving lives. Learning escape routes, how to keep from inhaling too much smoke and what to do if you catch fire are some of fire safety principles everybody should learn.
Getting Aware During Fire Safety Week
Fire Prevention Week begins the first Sunday in October and ends the following Saturday. This week is set aside especially for the education of individuals about fire safety in order to decrease the amount of damage to property and life that is done every year. It is also a time to recognize and appreciate fire services (called Fire Service Recognition Day).
This special fire week was instigated by President Coolidge in 1925 after the Great Chicago Fire. President Coolidge was alarmed by the number of deaths and amount of property damage that was caused by fire every year and saw that most of this was preventable. The fire safety week was declared in order to solve or at least lessen this problem.
Although we are all grateful for the work of firefighters, we need to be able to do our part concerning fire safety in order to prevent fires, injury and loss of life and damage to property whenever possible!
